Celery City> Sanford FL was celery capital in early 1900's

In the early 1900- 1940's  Sanford Florida was know as the "Celery Capital".
Celery grew easily in the boggy, sandy soil from Sanford to Geneva and Oviedo.

What is Old Time Music ?????

Most of the music Celery City plays comes from 1820-1920 era,  old time Fiddle and Banjo dance tunes that come from a 22 mile radius of Mt Airy, Surry County, North Carolina..  And from the Shoal Creek Valley region near Ranger NC. We also recover old dance tunes as far away as the western Virginia, and north Georgia, and certainly any other place we can find a snappy old tunes, while looking for it's Celtic Roots...

This style of music was played for home entertainment and local dances in the hills of the Appalachians from before the civil war era to the 1920's. This is when a fiddle and a banjo were a band. Music based on Celtic ballads and dance tunes brought to America from the hills of Scotland, Ireland and England.

In the 1920's, radio out of Bristol TN, featured local "performance" bands like the Skillet Lickers and the Carter Family, where guitar, and vocals were added to appeal to larger audiences with a potential to make a living from music ( novel concept!!).

Then Bluegrass started in the 1940's by musicians like Bill Monroe, featuring Mandolin and Banjo as the lead, yet based on what they called  "old time fiddle" tunes from the mountains.  They stepped up the tempo and moved to the big city.. Nashville...  This became the birth place of County and Country & Western which has become a most popular music form world-wide..  all from the roots of  "old time" Appalachian - Celtic music from those who first settled our great county.
